AYER — Casper "Papa" Latimer, 99, of Ayer, passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 12, 2026, at Emerson Hospital in Concord. Some lives are measured in years. Others are measured in the people they quietly shape. Papa's life was abundant in both. Born on November 10, 1926, in Mauldin, South Carolina, Casper was the son of Lawyer and Lydie (Shepard) Latimer. He spent his early years in the rolling hills of Greenville before making Ayer, Massachusetts, his home for the next seventy-five years. For twenty-five years, Casper faithfully served his country in the United States Army, retiring in 1970 as a NCO. Service, however, was never simply a profession to him—it was the rhythm of his life. After leaving the military, he continued caring for others as a nurse's aide at the former Montrath Health Care Facility, now Seven Hills Pediatric Hospital in Groton, and later devoted forty-seven years to veterans at the VA Hospital in Bedford. Remarkably, he continued working until retiring at the age of eighty-five. Those who knew him knew that Poppa believed a day was best spent doing something worthwhile. Whether walking the fairways at the Fort Devens Golf Course, where he was a longtime golfer, competing at table tennis with remarkable skill, or sharing fellowship through the Masonic Lodge, he approached each endeavor with quiet determination and humble confidence. Yet among all the stories of his long life, none was dearer than the one that began over a simple meal. Forty-seven years ago, Casper met Patricia-Bagni. Their first date was at Tiny's Restaurant, where they were served by Tiny herself. It became one of those stories they never tired of telling—a reminder that life's greatest journeys often begin in the most ordinary places. Thirteen years to the day after that first meal together, they returned to honor the beginning of their story by becoming husband and wife. They spent thirty-four beautiful years married, adding to the thirteen years they had already shared, making forty-seven years of love, friendship, laughter, and unwavering devotion. To countless family members, friends, neighbors, and children whose lives crossed his path, he was simply "Papa." It was a title never bestowed by obligation, but earned through kindness, wisdom, gentle humor, and a steadfast presence that made others feel at home. Even as the years carried him well beyond a century's doorstep, Papa never lost his wit. He and Pat shared a standing joke with their longtime friend Brian at Anderson Funeral Home, teasing him to "keep on waiting." True to form, Papa made everyone wait until he had nearly completed a full century before finally deciding it was time. Papa lived his life exactly as he chose—guided by duty, strengthened by perseverance, enriched by love, and seasoned with laughter. He asked for little, gave much, and left behind a legacy not only of years, but of character. Like a perfectly prepared meal, his life could be described in just two words: Well Done. He leaves behind his beloved wife and partner in life's greatest adventure, Patricia Bagni-Latimer; his daughters, Patricia Latimer of Leominster, Jonie Latimer-Brady of Fitchburg, and Carolyn Sargent and her Husband Brian Sargent of North Carolina; his grandchildren, Ciarra Latimer and her husband Christopher Woods and Danny Latimer of Los Angeles; his nephew, William Bagni and his wife, Nicole, of Virginia; and their children, Brooklyn, Avri, Xavier, and Tristen along with many extended family members and friends who were fortunate enough to call him Papa. He was predeceased by his daughter, Okhee Latimer, who passed away in 1966, by his brother, Coleman Lawyer Latimer, who passed away in 1972 and his son-in-law Anthony Brady in 2017. Family and friends are invited to celebrate Casper's remarkable life during a visitation on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at Anderson Funeral Home, 25 Fitchburg Road (Route 2A), Ayer. A prayer service with military honors will follow at 10:30 a.m. As the trees quietly mark the passing of seasons and rivers continue toward the sea, so too does a good life leave its course upon the world. Papa's journey was long, honest, and deeply loved. Those who remain will miss his steady presence, cherish his stories, smile at his humor, and be forever grateful that their paths were blessed to cross his.
