Carleton J. Mountain

Carleton J. Mountain, 75, of Ashby, Massachusetts, passed away on September 6, 2026. Born on June 24, 1951, in Gloucester, Massachusetts, to Carleton and Florence Mountain, Carl lived a life devoted to family, teaching, music, service, and community. A graduate of North Middlesex Regional High School, Carl later returned to the school that shaped him, beginning a career that touched generations. He earned a bachelor’s degree in history and a master’s degree in education from Fitchburg State University. Carl became a beloved history teacher at North Middlesex Regional High School in Townsend, inspiring generations with his passion for history, storytelling, humor, and his genuine interest in his young students. To students and colleagues, he was more than a teacher: he was a friend, mentor, coach, and trusted presence whose influence continued after graduation. He coached tennis at North Middlesex and, as a Justice of the Peace, had the special honor of marrying many former students, sharing in their happiest moments. Carl’s commitment to his community extended beyond the classroom. As a former member of the Ashby Board of Selectmen, he served the town he called home. He coached Little League baseball, helped with his children’s soccer teams, and gave his time and encouragement to local youth. He was a pillar of the community. Above all, Carl was a devoted father and grandfather. He was the proud father of Aaron and Allix and cherished being grandfather to Penny, Sammy, and Leo. He embraced fatherhood, including proudly becoming a “dance dad” for Allix. His family was his greatest source of pride and joy. Carl loved tennis and playing the drums, but most of all, he treasured people and friendships. Whether on the court, behind the drums, at a ball field, or gathered sharing stories and laughter, Carl made others feel welcome. He will be deeply missed by his children, grandchildren, sister Marcia, extended family, friends, former students, colleagues, and countless others whose lives he touched. Carl’s passing marks the end of an era. His lessons reached far beyond history books. He taught kindness, friendship, perseverance, and the importance of showing up for others. His stories will be retold, his laughter remembered, and those he influenced will carry a piece of him forward. Though he is gone, his impact will remain—in his family, students, community, and those fortunate enough to have called him a teacher, colleague, coach, mentor, friend, Dad, or Grampy. Calling hours will be held in the Anderson Funeral Home, 250 Main St., Townsend on Sunday, September 13th from 1:00 - 5:00pm. The burial will be held on Monday, September 14, at 11:00am in Hillside Cemetery, Townsend.
