John was born in Bloomington, IL on August 26, 1955, a son of the late Kenneth P. and Johanna (Endres) Hanson and has resided in Fitchburg since the late 80’s. John was a veteran of the Persian Gulf War having served as a Sergeant First Class in the U.S. Army. His military career started in 1985 as a Motor Transport Officer at Ft. Devens before being sent to Korea with the 60th Transportation Company. After his honorable discharge from active duty, John went on to serve in the Army Reserves for almost 10 years giving him nearly 18 years of total service. He received his associates’ degree in Criminal Justice from Mt. Wachusett Community College in Gardner and worked for 19 years as a correctional officer at the Souza-Baranowski Correctional Center in Shirley retiring in 2014. John was a member of the NRA and an avid marksmen. He shared his love of firearms with his family. He was also a lifelong fan of camping and enjoyed taking his family on these trips. During his military career he earned a variety of awards including, the Parachutist Badge, Humanitarian Service Medal, and the National Defense medal, as well as being awarded Instructor of the Year. He leaves his wife of 27 years, Ruthe M. (Lepp) Hanson of Fitchburg; two sons, Michael-Paul Hanson of Keene, NH and Kenneth J. Hanson and his wife Renee of Grandville, MI; two daughters, Maria E. Pappas and her husband Alex of Fitchburg and Carli R. Murphy and her husband Michael of Ashburnham; a brother, Paul K. Hanson and his wife Gail of IL; two sisters, Joan K. Gerjets and her husband Duane and Ann M. Hanson all of IL; nine grandchildren, Khali, Ryan, Sierra, Savannah, Sydney, Sawyer, Jordynn, Kaige and Chase and several nephews and nieces.
