Walter R. "Chuck" Kumpu, 68, formerly of Townsend

TOWNSEND: Walter R. “Chuck” Kumpu, Jr., 68, of Palm Harbor, FL, formerly of Townsend, passed away on May 7, 2025 and joined his mother and father in heaven! Chuck had a knack for finding a way to belong and be useful wherever his life took him. Chuck was a man who devoted his life to serving others, making people laugh, showing up for the people he loved, and quietly making a difference in the lives of those around him. Though he wore many hats throughout his life—teacher, police officer, TSA agent, bartender, father figure, son, brother, uncle, mentor, and friend—those who knew Chuck will remember him most for the size of his heart and the love he gave so freely. Chuck was born in Fitchburg on June 7, 1956, a son of the late Walter and Marjorie (Duke) Kumpu and older brother to Dave and grew up in Townsend. From an early age, he was active in his community. He attended Townsend Congregational Church, participated in Explorers and Boy Scouts, raised a variety of pets and played ice hockey in the Fitchburg leagues. Townsend was not simply the place where Chuck grew up—it remained a meaningful part of who he was throughout his life. He spent his summers at the family lake house in New Hampshire waterskiing, having cookouts, and creating the best memories. He was a 1974 graduate of North Middlesex Regional High School in Townsend and continued his education at Fitchburg State College, where he majored in Industrial Technology. He was a member of the Gaveleer Society and served as its President. While attending college, Chuck served as a reserve police officer in Townsend. After graduation, he began his career as a teacher, teaching Architectural Drawing in Gloucester, MA, and Nashua, NH. His ability to teach, guide, and encourage others eventually led him to a career in law enforcement with the Groton Police Department. During his years with the Groton Police Department, Chuck established and implemented the D.A.R.E. program for the Groton public school system. He cared deeply about young people and believed in giving them guidance, encouragement, and the tools they needed to make good choices. He was more than a police officer; he was a trusted presence and an advocate for the community he served. In 2005, with the impending birth of his first niece, Chuck made a major change in his life. He retired from the police force and moved to Tampa, Florida, to be closer to his mother, brother, and family. Soon after arriving, he became the doting uncle and godfather to his niece, Aili. He lovingly helped care for her as an infant, giving his brother Dave and sister-in-law Janet a helping hand and, in the process, creating memories that would last a lifetime. He excitedly extended his role as uncle to his second neice, Heidi when she was born four years later. Chuck's move to Florida began another chapter of service. He continued working in law enforcement for more than 15 years as an agent with the Transportation Security Administration at Tampa International Airport. After retiring from TSA, Chuck found another way to stay connected to people when he became a part-time bartender at the Moose Lodge in Palm Harbor. There, he enjoyed serving drinks, sharing stories, teasing friends, and simply being part of the lives of the people around him. But perhaps Chuck's most important role was one that never appeared on a job title or résumé. Although Chuck never had children of his own, he became a father in every way that truly mattered to Bruce Bailey. Chuck never needed a title to define his relationship with Bruce. From the time he was nine months old, Chuck simply became his dad. He was there for the milestones, the challenges, the celebrations, and everything in between. He taught Bruce, protected him, guided him, encouraged him, laughed with him, and stood beside him through every stage of his life and took tremendous price in the man he became. Chuck considered Bruce his son, and Bruce knew Chuck as a father. Their bond was one of the great loves of Chuck's life. They shared road trips, golfing, cars, countless hobbies, countless conversations, and the ordinary moments that ultimately become the most treasured memories. Chuck poured his heart and soul into Bruce's life, always wanting the very best for him and always making sure he knew he was loved. Chuck was equally devoted to his nieces, Aili and Heidi. He rarely missed their school events, musical performances with Entertainment Revue, or the important moments in their lives. He was the uncle who showed up—the one sitting in the audience, cheering them on, proud of them, and letting them know that their accomplishments mattered. He even introduced two new family members to the house as a surprise birthday present for his neices (Rascal and Penelope, kittens)....without telling Mom and Dad. Family meant everything to Chuck. He dedicated the last few years of his life, also helping to care for his mother, Marjorie prior to her passing. He had a gift for making people feel cared for and included. He formed deep friendships wherever he went and remained loyal to the people who became part of his life. Whether he was wearing a police uniform, working at the airport, pouring a drink at the Moose Lodge, standing beside Bruce, or cheering on his nieces, Chuck found meaning in being there for others. Chuck leaves behind his brother and sister-in-law, David B. and Janet L. Kumpu of Tampa, FL; his beloved nieces, Aili R. Kumpu and Heidi L. Kumpu; his “son,” Bruce Bailey; and his cousins and their families, Jeffrey Duke and David Duke. Chuck's family celebrated his life in Florida with his dear friends last year. Now, he will be remembered and honored in the town that helped shape the man he became and again celebrate his life with family and friends up north. A service celebrating Chuck's life will be held 10 AM Saturday, October 3rd, at Townsend Congregational Church, 7 Brookline Street, Townsend. Interment will follow at Hillside Cemetery, A life celebration and lunch will follow in the Fellowship Hall of the Townsend Congregational Church. Chuck spent his life serving others, protecting others, teaching others, and loving his family and friends. He leaves behind far more than memories. He leaves behind people whose lives are better because he was part of them. He was a son, brother, uncle, father figure, mentor, colleague, and friend—and to so many, simply Chuck. He is deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever carried in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know and love him.
