Teresa M. (Whalen) Meehan

TOWNSEND: Teresa M. (Whalen) Meehan, 90, of Townsend died Wednesday, December 14, 2022 peacefully at her home. Teresa was born in Boston, MA on July 23, 1932 and grew up in the Fields Corner neighborhood of Dorchester. She was a loving daughter of the late Francis E. and Ellen M. (Riley) Whalen. In her youth she attended St. Ambrose School and Cathedral High School in Boston. After graduation, she worked for several years at New England Telephone in Boston. She had a life-long love of children and worked as a teacher’s aide at Spaulding Memorial School and Hawthorne Brook Middle School in Townsend. Teresa was a 50+ year resident of Townsend and Falmouth, MA. She was a passionate church goer and long-time member of St. John’s Church in Townsend and served as a Eucharistic Minister for many years. She was an enthusiastic member of the Red Hat Society, a long-term member of the Townsend Homemakers Club and was active at the Townsend Senior Center for many years, where she led aerobics classes with her friend Marion Cote. Teresa was a wonderful daughter, sister, wife, mother and grandmother who loved spending time with family first and foremost. She loved the ocean and the beach and enjoyed traveling with family to new places, including trips to Ireland, Mallorca, Spain, Bermuda, the Bahamas, Niagara Falls and frequent trips to Turks & Caicos, and the Gulf Coast of Florida. Teresa is survived by six children, Judith Meehan and her husband, Rory Deutsch of New York City, Joseph C. Meehan and his wife Nancy of Framingham, Michael P. Meehan of Boston, David D. Meehan and his wife, Ryanne of Townsend, Kathleen Meehan of Goffstown, NH and Billy Barrett of Ashburnham; her sister, Mary L. Whalen of Dorchester; her sisters-in-law, Dympna Whalen of Milton and June Boyd of Somerville; two former daughters-in-law, Christine Meehan of Milford, NH and Marcia DeAmicis of Townsend; her former son-in-law, Joseph Goreham of Bedford, NH; eight grandchildren, Catherine Meehan, Emily Meehan, Jessica Cronin, Michael Meehan, Samantha Meehan, Joseph Goreham, Aiden Goreham and Jacy Kretas. She was predeceased by her husband, Michael J. Meehan in 2009, her son Stephen M. Meehan in 2019 and her brother, Francis J. Whalen in 2010. Endless thanks to Pattie Novello, owner of C-A Homecare of Pepperell and her wonderful group of caregivers who enabled Teresa to stay safe and happy in her own home for the past five years. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 AM Monday, December 19, 2022 at St. John’s Church, 1 School Street, Townsend. Interment will be at Hillside Cemetery, Townsend, followed by a reception in celebration of Teresa’s life at the hall at St. John’s Church. Teresa’s family will receive relatives and friends at calling hours from 2-5 PM Sunday, December 18, 2022 at Anderson Funeral Home, 250 Main Street (Rte.119) Townsend Center. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Townsend Council on Aging (Senior Center) or Squannacook Greenways (Rail Trail) in Teresa’s honor.
