Maria E. Costa

Fitchburg - Maria E. (Dutra) Costa, 96, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her loving family on July 12, 2025. Maria was born in the Azores, Portugal on April 19, 1929, a daughter of the late Jose and Maria (Borge) Dutra. After raising her family in Portugal, Maria moved to the United States in 1980, residing in Fitchburg ever since. She worked for many years at the former Asher Pants Company until her retirement. Her retirement years were spent watching her grandchildren grow and in her spare time, she enjoyed knitting and crocheting. She was a devout member of Saint Joseph Church in Fitchburg. Maria was a generous woman who was always willing to give of herself in order to help others. She took great pleasure in making sure those around her were fed, and made a friend out of everyone she met. She will be greatly missed. Maria is survived by her children, Maria dos Anjos of London, Ontario, Connie Aguiar and husband John of Fitchburg, Jose Costa of Sao Miguel, Portugal, Miguel Costa and wife Manuela of Fitchburg, Angelo Costa and wife Rosarinha of Fitchburg, Ilda Machado and husband Humberto of Fitchburg, Ana Costa of Fitchburg, and Paula Rice of Lunenburg; grandchildren, Nelson Lazaro, Eric Aguiar and fiancé Kristy Cole, Jason and Bonnie Lazaro, Laura and Patrick Paquin, Jessica and Adam Saball, Brian and Christina Costa, Jeff Machado, Mike and Jessica Costa, Jeremy and Courtney Machado, Zach Costa, Tyler Cordio, Olivia Cordio; great grandchildren, Jonathan, Victor, Kennedy, Sofia, Callahan, Charlotte, Holden, and Sullivan. She was predeceased by her husband Domingos F. Costa in 2009 as well as her son Jose Manuel, sons-in-law, Jose Lazaro and Jonathan Rice, and a great granddaughter Amelia Paquin. A calling hour will be held on Saturday, July 19, in the Isabelle & Anderson Funeral Home, 316 Clarendon St., Fitchburg from 9:30-10:30am. The funeral Mass will be held in Saint Joseph Church, 49 Woodland Ave, Fitchburg at 11:00am, followed by burial in the parish cemetery.
