James W. Hunt, 73, of Townsend

Townsend: James W. Hunt, 73, a resident of Townsend for nearly fifty years, died unexpectedly Monday, February 16, 2026 while enjoying his retirement and vacationing in Naples, FL. James was born on February 28, 1952 in Worcester, MA to Edward and Esther (Prada) Hunt and grew up in Northborough, MA. He was a 1970 graduate of Algonquin Regional High School. For 45 fulfilling years, and following in his father’s footsteps, Jim enjoyed his life long career at MIT Lincoln Laboratories/Haystack Observatory in Westford, MA, retiring in April 2018. His list of hobbies and talents are endless, spanning decades of pure knowledge, craftsmanship and enjoyment. He was a lifetime member of the Westford Sportsman’s Club, loved the game of pickleball, cornhole, ping pong, cycling, HAM radio and thoroughly enjoyed any project around the yard with his favorite Kubota tractor. He was a car enthusiast, mechanical genius, avid welder and enthusiastic foodie. Good luck naming a food he did not like. He will always be remembered for his willingness to lend a hand, fixing something and making it stronger (or more efficient) than how it was built in the first place or building something you needed, making it indestructible. All with a smile and determination because these are the things that made him happy. Jim and his treasured wife, Kathleen, were blessed to enjoy many years of fun together, whether playing pickleball, travelling, volunteering to care for cats or enjoying trying different foods both at home and in restaurants. Jim was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and stepfather. He leaves his beloved wife of 12 years, Kathleen R. (Moschak) Hunt; his son and daughter in law, Ryan and Jennifer Hunt of Pepperell; his daughter and son in law, Kerri and Matthew Landry of Lunenburg; his step son, Liam P. Sweeney of Townsend; his step daughter, Erin A. Sweeney of Hudson, NH; two brothers, Daniel and Carolyn Hunt of Wyoming, David and Teresa Hunt of Northborough; his former spouse, Diane (Fiske) Hunt of Lunenburg; seven cherished grandchildren, Lydia, Sylvia, RJ and Eli Hunt and Matteia, Beckett and Jagger Landry. He leaves many nieces, nephews, extended family, friends and pets. James was predeceased by his parents, Edward and Esther Hunt of Northborough as well as his brother, Geoffrey Hunt of Maine. He has dedicated many years to volunteering at the Pat Brody Cat Shelter, he has never met a cat he didn’t love. He will especially be missed by his cherished feline companion, Milo. He leaves behind a legacy of love and kindness that will never be forgotten.
