Helen L. Hayes Metcalf

LLUNENBURG: Helen L. (Rice) Hayes – Metcalf, 80, of Lunenburg died Friday evening, August 16, 2024 at Ayer Valley Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, Ayer, MA. Helen was born in Fitchburg, March 30, 1944, a daughter of Hubert and Martha (Caldwell) Rice and resided most of her life in Lunenburg. Helen was a 1962 graduate of Lunenburg High School where she was a standout basketball player. Following graduation she attended Henri’s School of Hair Design in Fitchburg, MA. An accomplished artist who briefly attended art school in Worcester, Helen enjoyed working with watercolors and oils. She was an avid fan of the New England Patriots and was a lover of animals, especially her beloved pets. Helen worked many years in the area as a hairdresser and for the past twenty years was at Cost Cutters in Lunenburg before retiring in 2022. She leaves her husband of 54 years, Walter E. Metcalf; her two daughters, Cheryl Hayes – Farrell and her husband Larry of Leominster, Lori Moore of Adams; her son, Dale R. “Charlie” Hayes and his wife Janis of Baldwinville; three step daughters, Rhonda Keefe of Bethlehem, NH, Lauriann Metcalf of Fitchburg, Robin Baum of Leominster; her sister Marcia Brobst and her husband Dennis of Wimauma, FL; her close family friend Alana Wright Michaud; and three grandchildren, Matthew Moore, Olivia Hayes and Eric Hayes. The family is grateful and thankful to all of the staff at Ayer Valley Nursing & Rehabilitation Center who helped care for her for the past year. Funeral services will be held 11 AM Wednesday, August 21, 2024 at the Anderson Funeral Home, 250 Main Street, (Rte 119) Townsend Center. www.andersonfuneral.com.
