Edward J. Halleran Jr.

GROTON: Edward J. Halleran, Jr., 85, of Groton, passed away peacefully Thursday, September 3, 2026, at Ayer Valley Rehabilitation & Nursing Center, Ayer. Ed was born in Ayer on February 2, 1941. He was the son of Edward J. and Fern (Moore) Halleran. He grew up in Ayer and was a former member of the St. Mary’s Church Fife & Drum Corp, as well as the Knights of Columbus. He later moved to Groton, MA, where he resided for nearly sixty years. Ed graduated from Ayer High School in 1959, where he was a standout athlete, lettering in baseball, basketball and football. Following his graduation from high school, he continued his education at St. Anselm’s College in Manchester, NH, receiving a bachelor's degree. Ed served his country for two years in the United States Army, working in the dental clinic in Augsburg, Germany, and continued to serve in the Army reserves for three years. After the Army, Ed worked 38 years for Travelers Insurance Company, servicing the Lowell, Danvers and Worcester areas. He retired in 2004. As an adult, Ed enjoyed golfing, coaching baseball, and served as a commissioner for the Groton Jr. Hockey organization for multiple years. He especially enjoyed connecting with children, parents, and coaches. Ed was an ardent Boston sports fan and enjoyed watching the Red Sox, Bruins, Patriots and Celtics. He was known for his dry sense of humor and playful pranks that he would play on family and friends. He also enjoyed listening to Rock ‘n’ Roll music, even continuing on later in life. He leaves his wife of 59 years, Nancy C. (Cramer) Halleran; three sons, Matthew E. Halleran and his wife, Amy of North Tustin, CA, Justin A. Halleran of Groton, Timothy M. Halleran of Groton, his sister, Cynthia Lissfelt of Hingham; three grandchildren, Tyler Halleran, Nathaniel Halleran and Abigail Halleran. Ed’s family will receive relatives and friends at calling hours on Tuesday, September 15 from 4pm to 7pm at the Anderson Funeral Home, 25 Fitchburg Road, Ayer. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, September 16 at 11:00am in the funeral home. Interment will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Ayer. The Anderson Funeral Home, 25 Fitchburg Road, Ayer is assisting the family with arrangements.
