Desire J. Cormier

ASHBY- Desire J. Cormier, 97, of Ashby, passed away on Sunday, February 19, 2023 in his home surrounded by his loving family. Mr. Cormier was born in Ste. Paul, New Brunswick, Canada, on July 7, 1925, a son of the late, Alphee and Alida (Gaudette) Cormier and came to the United States in 1953 residing in Leominster before moving to Ashby, MA, in 1994. Desire was a master carpenter for over 60 years, and 50 year member of the Carpenters Union Local #48 prior to his retirement. He was a communicant of St. John's Parish in Townsend and had attended St. Cecilia's Church in Leominster. Mr. Cormier was a devoted husband and father dedicated to his faith and family. His passions included gardening, playing cribbage, traveling to Canada and Florida and producing maple syrup with his son Raymond and brother, Phil. He had a love of nature and was an avid outdoorsman. He also had a love of music and was a talented fiddle player. His wife of 63 years, Marie (Albert) Cormier passed away in 2009. He leaves his four sons, Louis R. Cormier and his wife Janis of Port St. Lucie, FL, Raymond J. Cormier and his wife Nancy of Leominster, Gerard J. Cormier and his wife Karen and John J. Cormier and his wife Donna all of Ashby; four daughters, Denise J. Lavoie of Westminster, Norma E. Francis and her husband Keith of Milford NH, Lucie R. Chisholm of Greenland NH, and Lorraine I. Ruta and her husband Thom of Northampton; two brothers, Leonide Cormier of N.B. Canada and Philias Cormier of Lunenburg; two sisters, Evelyn Hebert and Leona Cormier both of N.B. Canada; eighteen grandchildren, thirty three great-grandchildren, a great-great granddaughter, many nieces and nephews and his best friend, Ernie Henri. He was predeceased by a granddaughter, Renee Browne, a brother, Gerard Cormier and a sister Rita Blanchard. His funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, February 22, 2023 at 1:30 PM in St. John's Church, 1 School Street, Townsend, MA. Burial will be held privately at a later date at St. Cecilia's Cemetery, Leominster. Calling hours will be held prior to the funeral on Wednesday from 11AM to 1PM in the T.J.
