Bernard J. Moran

Bernard (Bernie, Benny) J. Moran, 97, passed away peacefully at the Life Care Center of Littleton, MA on July 5th, 2024. Bernie was born February 20th, 1927, in Fitchburg, MA, the son of the late John B. and Imelda Mary Gonthier Moran. Bernie graduated from Lunenburg High School in 1944. Bernie proudly served his country for eight years in the Navy as a Seabees in World War II and the Korean War. Bernie was stationed in many different countries including Japan, French Morocco, and Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Bernie leaves behind his loving wife of 72 years, Joan Townsend Moran. He also leaves behind his Aunt Pauline Gonthier Perla and her husband Robert Perla of Leominster, MA, his nieces Nancy Mellitt of Concord New Hampshire, Judith Cooperrider of Jacksonville Florida, and their families. Benny also leaves behind members of Joan’s family, John and Caroline Charonko of Lake Placid Florida, Sue and Scott Derrickson of Front Royal Virginia and Jim Charonko and wife Julie of Wolcott Vermont and their families who were all a big part of Benny’s life. Bernie worked in Peterborough, New Hampshire as a meat manager at A&P grocery store for 22 years. Following A&P, Bernie and Joan ran Harbour Package and Country Store in Townsend Harbour for another 22 years. After the country store, Bernie and Joan opened Cherry Hill Antiques, which they ran for many years in Townsend Harbour, out of their cherished home for 60 years. Bernie was an avid bird watcher who spent hours sitting, enjoying, and identifying birds. Over the years, Bernie was active with the Townsend Historical Society and VFW. Bernie and Joan enjoyed traveling and visiting with their loving families. Bernie was grateful to his healthcare providers for making it possible for him to stay at home as long as he was able to. Bernie, Joan, and the family are also very thankful to Ken and Kathy Dow, good friends who helped Bernie and Joan for many years. Burial with military honors will be held at the Massachusetts Veteran's Memorial Cemetery, 111 Glenallen St., Winchendon, MA 01475 on Friday, July 19, 2024 at 3:00pm.
