Lynne & Family… “Garf” was always a ray of sunshine. He was part of our “High School Family of Friends”..who all had such a special bond, and made some wonderful memories together. Although life took us on separate paths after college, I still thought about him often. The wonderful tributes to him do not surprise me, and bring a smile to my face. My deepest sympathy to you and your family.

    Dear Garafola Family,
I am a teacher and a parent in Concord, so I knew Gary in both respects. He was a friendly and happy guy who always made the ride on the bus a fun one. More recently my daughter, Sarah, had the pleasure of driving with him. He was known as a tough but fair instructor who wanted the kids to learn well the rules of the road. Sarah was with another driver last Friday and was hit from behind, although she was rattled she kept her appointment with Gary on Saturday. He was comforting and encouraging and even stopped by a roadside stand and bought her some honey. He showed her kindness that none of my family will ever forget. Our family and communtiy are very saddened at his loss and we offer our greatest condolences. He will be missed.

    Dear Lynne and family,
I can’t find the words to express the shock and sadness I felt when I learned about Gary’s accident and eventual passing and this is not the way I would choose to reconnect with you. Ellen and I are keeping you in prayer as this is the one meaningful way to support you. As I read the obituary above, I was able to find a smile in the description given to Gary’s work as a school bus driver because that is exactly how I remembered him, he loves kids. I have very fond memories of him and you all back in the days of going to functions. I especially remember Keith (didn’t he get started in the business?) and one of your daughters (the soccer player) and of course, Lynne. Gary was an amazing person and he now rests with an amazing God where his loved ones will join them some day. Love and blessings, Pascal

    Dear Garafola Family,

We are absolutely heartbroken to learn of your loss. Mr. G was my daughter’s kindergarten bus driver 3 years ago. What an absolute joy it was to see the bus pulling up to house with Mr. G wearing a wig or funny hat. His kindness and sense of humor made my daughter thrilled to ride home on his bus, and as a parent I can’t tell you how much it meant to me to have such a wonderful person be a part of her day to day life. We stayed in touch with Mr. G over the years, seeing him at Willard and at all the Concord School Committee meetings when they were trying to outsource our busing. My daughter and I ran into him at Willard just last Wednesday. We were so happy to see him, gave him a big hug and spoke about how fast kids grow up. I am so thankful for that. Mr. G will be missed greatly by his many friends in Concord.
We send you our sincere condolences.
    Yours truly,

    Allison Larew

My son Parker and his fellow bus riders to/from MLDC during the summer(s) thought the world of the man they nicknamed “Orb.” He encouraged it, and let them touch his head (for luck?), but more than that, he encouraged THEM with his banter, his smiles, and his warmth. Our deepest sympathy to Gary’s family. Margaret (fourth grade) and our family met Gary for the first time this school year when he added our road to his route. We just started to get to know “Mr. G” and could see how kind and fun he was to the kids and to their families. Our three-year old, Grace, liked to give him flowers she picked for him when he stopped, and they had some cute conversation. Gary surely knew how to engage young and old alike with his contagious smile and antics, like the beanie hat with the propeller and the bouncy “Tigger” hat he wore. While Gary entered our lives for just a brief time, we have been touched by his congeniality, fun-loving nature, and gentleness, and we will remember him. We wish Gary’s family happy memories and peace, for the beautiful life he lived and the many, many lives he touched and brightened.

With thanks to Gary and sympathy for his loving family,

We still laugh over the little newlywed couple that moved in across the street from us so many years ago, and remember our adventures as the Ripple Roaders. They slept in the car in the woods in order to be first in line to cut down a tree with their brand new, unsharpened chain saw.

I teach Kindergarten at Willard School, and was one of many lucky people to know Gary as a fine bus driver and a good friend. Always friendly and generally silly, Gary made everyone’s day better. I always knew that my students were safe and well cared for. Gary also made a point of getting to know everyone whose path he crossed, and always had a kind and cheerful thing to say. He was dedicated to his job and took pride in what and who he was. I will truly miss him as a member of the Willard community. He was a man who really did make a difference.

It’s so difficult to find the words to express my sadness. The words seem to fall into the empty pit in my stomach that’s been there since I heard of Gary’s death.
I will never forget him. His death is a loss to us all and to those who had never met him. I know that Gary lives on in the boys and Kimberly, and in your heart. It’s easy to see, from all the messages on this page, that Gary lives on in so many of us, too.

We were surprised and saddened to hear of Gary’s passing. This is a great loss to all who had the pleasure of knowing and loving him – he had such spirit and love of life. We will remember him as one “wild and crazy guy” as well as all the other roles he played in the Sandy Island
“talent” show. He was so loved and will be greatly missed. Our condolences to all his family and friends. He will never be forgotten.

To our family, Gary was the smiling and welcoming face of Marcus Lewis Day Camp. We gave him our child every day of the summer and between drop-offs and pick-ups, we managed to get to know Gary. He was quick with a smile or joke and it was clear that all the children adored him including our son Erik. We will miss him dearly and feel it will be impossible for anyone to fill his colorful shoes. Our heartfelt condolences go to his family, many friends, and everyone touched by this wonderful man.

    Lynn and family;
I am so sad to hear about Gary. When he came into the town hall to pay the taxes I would roll my eyes and say not you again. We would joke back and forth for a minute or two and then he would be off to another office. I enjoyed our talks each trying to one up the other. I met two of your sons and they were always polite. He tried to convince me he had a full head of curly hair like his son. I still have doubts. He seemed to love life and take things in stride. I will miss him truly.

One day he came in and had me convinced that he had a twin brother. Not only was he our driver for Bus 33, he also acted as a noon aide substitute and I know the children adored him. When Tomorrow Starts Without Me
    By David Romano

    When tomorrow starts without me,
    and I’m not there to see;
If the sun should rise and find your eyes
    all filled with tears for me;
I wish so much you wouldn’t cry
    the way you did today,
While thinking of the many things
    we didn’t get to say.
I know how much you love me,
as much as I love you,
And each time you think of me,
I know you’ll miss me, too.
But when tomorrow starts without me,
    please try and understand,
That an angel came and called my name
and took me by the hand,
And said my place was ready
    in heaven far above,
And that I’d have to leave behind
    all those I dearly love.
But as I turned to walk away,
a tear fell from my eye,
For all my life I’d always thought
    I didn’t want to die.
I had so much to live for
and so much yet to do,
    It seemed almost impossible
    that I am leaving you.
I thought of all the yesterdays,
the good ones and the bad,
I thougth of all the love we shared
and all the fun we had.
    If I could relive yesterday,
I thought, just for a while,
I’d say good-bye and kiss you
    and maybe see your smile.
    But then I fully realized
    that this could never be.
    For emptiness and memories
would take the place of me.
And when I thought of worldly things
    that I’d miss come tomorrow,
I thought of you, and when I did,
my heart was filled with sorrow.
But when I walked through heaven’s gates,
I felt so much at home.
When God look down and smiled at me,
    from His great golden throne.
    He said, “This is eternity
    and all I’ve promised you,
Today your life on earth is past,
    but here it starts anew.
    I promise no tomorrow,
    but today will always last,
And since each day’s the same day,
there’s no longing for the past.
But you have been so faithful,
    so trusting and so true,
Though there were times you did some things
    you knew you shouldn’t do.
    But you have been forgiven,
and now at last your free.
So won’t you take my hand
and share my life with me?”
So when tomorrow starts without me,
    don’t think we’re far apart,
For everytime you think of me,
I’m right here in your heart.

I really didn’t know Gary, but I had the wonderful opportunity to have met Gary at the Beede Center in Concord about 4 years ago. It was when I was doing PT for my knee and I was in the gym during mid day hours and the gym was very quite. He made instant impact with his warm and welcoming personality. It may have been 5 or 6 times that I saw Gary that year…but I can only say that I felt like I knew him for years. I remember him being so proud of his daughter that had recently gone to school in Pittsburgh. I know having had the limited opportunity to met Gary that he made an impact on my life and I can only image how many other lives that impacted even more. He will be greatly missed.

    Dear Lynne,

Our hearts are broken, yet certainly no more than your heart and the hearts of your children and family!

Events like this are not supposed to happen to good people! Gary had an amazing smile, huge heart, positive attitude and deep love for you and his children. He was so proud of all of you!

In times like this, when nothing seems to make any sense, Jeanne and I open our Bible. Here, God reasures us that He is in control, and that His will shall be done! That we are to “Trust” in his will, and not depend on our own limited human “understanding”.

Proverbs Ch. 3 vs. 5: Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.

Gary clearly “touched” so many different people in so many wonderful ways. This is what we must remember and celebrate most when we think of Gary.

Our prayers are with you and your family!

Mr. G was my daughter, Juliana’s, bus driver on Bus 33 for the past 3-4 years. We adored him. I’ll never forget how touched I was on the last day of school when I saw him with his baseball cap getting signatures from all the children who rode his bus that year. There was no mistaking his genuine affection for the children entrusted to his care. His kind and generous spirit and gregarious personality endeared him to all who came across his path. He also had a way of making each child feel special. Just last week, Gary was teasing Juliana about all the stuff she had and how long it was taking her to get off the bus. As he drove away, I said to her, “you know, you’re one of his “favorites”. She smiled in response,”I know mommy”. Yet we both knew that each child on the bus was a favorite to him. This year, as my son John started kindergarten, he was so excited to finally be able to ride Mr. G’s bus with his sister and the other “big kids” to the Willard school. I’m so terribly saddened that he only had that opportunity for about 3 weeks. Then again, we are blessed that he was able to know him even if only for a short time. As a counselor at Concord-Carlisle High School, I had the opportunity to talk with several students who knew and loved Mr. G as their bus driver or driver’s education teacher. Please know that our family is holding yours in our thoughts and prayers as you mourn the loss of such a special man. While there are no words that can take away some of the pain you must be feeling, we hope you can take some comfort in knowing that his life touched so many others and that there are so many of us holding you in prayer.

Although I didn’t know Gary well, I know he was a good father by watching the testimony of his 5 kids. It has always been evident how devoted all the Garafola kids were to their family. They were always kind and respectful to others, dependable, going out of their way to help others in need and always with a great and cheerful attitude, never expecting anything in return. I am not surprised that two of them were Eagle Scouts! So Keith, Lee, Kim, Paul and Jeffrey, your lives are a testimony and a reflection of your father in you. He was obviously a great man and father, and I, like others, also was shocked to hear the tragic news. Praying for all of you and your mom to have God’s perfect peace in the midst of this horribly difficult time. Paul, my mother in Oregon has fond memories of you and wanted me to tell you how sorry she is that this has happened to you and your family. Blessings to your family and condolences from all of us! As I was reading every condolence note I fought back the tears because Gary would never want to see anyone sad. If you were he had a magic to make you feel better. A magic that was a gift from God. I worked with him the last four summers at the MLDC where my two boys also attended. As we all know Gary was a love, genuine and up lifting. You could not help but smile in his presence. It was simply impossible not to. That was his gift that we were so lucky to have touch our lives.
To his family I am at a loss for words to express to you how sorry I am for your loss. His passing makes no sense but to think he smiled enough for ten life times and is in heaven now smiling down on all the lives he touched. So if you are having a bad day just look up. He will still be here for us and you!

All of his love, kindness and humor will forever live on through everyone’s memories of him! We’re thankful and blessed to have been part of his wonderful life through our children and scouting. I remember when I was a teenager myself, going with Lynne & Gary on ski trips to babysit Keith. The love that started between two people grew so enormously and spread through all of their children! What a beautiful family! Our hearts ache for you all but know that the love you share will provide you with the strength to move ahead! Gary drove my son Matthew to Marcus Lewis Camp this summer and several summers ago. He always made my son’s mornings fun and special with his jokes, his infectious smile and his sunny disposition. I doubt Matthew can recall the names of his camp counselors from last summmer now, but he has fond memories of Gary and is still retelling his jokes (which he has shared with his classmates, friends and family members). Richard and I are heartsick to learn of the accident that took Gary to his heavenly home. Such fond memories we have of him, whether it would be at Fitchburg Savings Bank, where I waited on him as a teller, or at St. John’s after mass, just laughing and chatting, or when Richard waited on him in the Townsend Package store, cracking a joke or 2, or sharing a story, or when you, Lynne and Gary came to our home to teach us about Amway. You are such a special family. To know Gary Garafola was to love him.
To you Lynne, and your wonderful family, our deepest sympathy. May God hold you all close to his heart.

We are so saddened to hear about Mr. G. and his family’s loss. My kids were on Mr. G’s Bus #33 route for the last few years. He would oft-times wait while a neighbor kid ran to meet the bus. Sometimes even driving into the neighborhood to look for someone running late, even though the bus route did not include coming into the neighborhood. He always had a smile for the kids and would wave to the parents too. We will remember him fondly.

Mr. G was the safest, most conscientious person we could have had taking care of our children. Our bus 33 stop was at a relatively dangerous intersection and he always took extra care of the kids at our stop, and personally saw to it that my kids were always safe.
When Mr. G asked us to come to the Town Meeting with the Transportation Dept, it was my duty to be there and show my support, if nothing else – just because he asked.
Take a second today and do something good for someone else in Gary’s memory.

So very hard to find words to express our sense of loss. Gary is a part of my pantheon of saints… people I would aspire to be. He took such care of our children, and I believe he loved each one. When my son started kindergarten he had to cross the street at the bus stop on a crack in the pavement. If the bus accidently stopped on that crack, Jordan would burst into tears and run back into the house and I would have to run after him and coax him out again. When Gary took over our route he made certain that the bus never stopped on that crack, the entire time he was driving. That was the kind of care he gave, and I’m sure he did plenty of kind things for my boys that I never even knew about. So hard to say goodbye… we will miss him. He is one of heaven’s Diamonds now! Our prayers rise up for you and for Gary.

He drove the bus a couple of years ago for a “mystery trip” with the softball team that included playing laser tag. He joined the team and made it that much more fun. Since then, whenever I would see him passing by on my way in or out of the building, he always flashed the friendliest smile and had something nice or funny to say in passing. Our family is deeply saddened by the loss of Gary. I feel so lucky to have had him as my son’s bus driver for the last 2 years. Our son loved riding with Mr. G everyday, with his silly hats and opposite day was his favorite. He will be greatly missed.

We are so saddened to hear of the passing of Gary. My husband and I both have happy memories of doing the Townsend VFW Christmas Eve Santas with Gary. I used to help him put his Santa suit on and do his makeup. He will be greatly missed. Our sincere condolences and prayers go out to his wife and children. We will always remember his enthusiasm and fun loving attitude.
